Customer reactivation: how to win back those who left
Acquiring a new customer is usually pricier than winning back an old one. You already have a base of those who bought and disappeared — an underrated asset. Let's break down how to reactivate them.
Who the "sleeping" are
Customers who once bought/interacted but haven't returned in a while. They already know and trust you — the barrier is lower than with cold leads. They need an occasion and a reminder.
Step 1. Segment
Don't write everyone the same. Split:
- haven't bought in a while but were active;
- bought once and disappeared;
- dropped off at some stage (cart, request).
For each segment — its own message.
Step 2. Find an occasion
A plain "come back" doesn't work. Occasions:
- A novelty or update — "we've got what you were waiting for."
- A personal offer — a discount/bonus "for returning."
- Care — "haven't seen you in a while, how are you? here's some value."
- A deadline — a limited offer.
Step 3. Choose the channel
Email, a Telegram bot, push, retargeting, a call (for B2B/high check). Better where the customer was already in touch with you.
Step 4. Don't overdo it
Reactivation isn't spam. One or two careful touches with real value. If there's no response — don't hammer; move them to "archive" or rare touches.
Metrics
Share of returnees, revenue from reactivation, cost of return (usually well below new-customer CAC). Compare: win back vs acquire new — reactivation is often more profitable.
Takeaway
Reactivation = segmentation + a real occasion + a personal offer + the right channel, without spam. It's a cheap source of sales from those who already know you. We help build retention and customer win-back as part of marketing.
